VN-Index drops despite bank stocks surging

The market fell on Wednesday morning as the rebound of many big bank stocks could only pare some losses.

The VN-Index on the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange (HoSE) declined 0.05 per cent to 1,179.26 points. The market's breadth was still negative as many large-cap stocks still struggled with selling pressure.

On the bourse, 233 stocks fell while 212 stocks rose.

During the morning trade, more than 476.97 million shares were traded, worth nearly VND10.78 trillion.

Despite the fall of the general market, the VN30-Index tracking the 30 biggest stocks in market value still climbed 0.07 per cent to 1,188.72 points on the rebound of bank stocks.

Of the 30 biggest stocks, 13 stocks increased while 17 stocks fell. Stocks gaining points were mostly in banking sectors including Vietinbank (CTG), Vietnam International Commercial Joint Stock Bank (VIB), Techcombank (TCB), Sacombank (STB), HDBank (HDB) and VPBank (VPB).

On the Ha Noi Stock Exchange (HNX), the HNX-Index edged lower to 275.87 points, while the HNX30-Index rose 1.36 per cent to 397.97 points.

Domestic investors poured VND1.36 trillion into the northern bourse in the morning session, equivalent to over 85.9 million shares traded.
