First mercury-free battery factory in Binh Phuoc put into operation

The handover ceremony of the GPPD battery factory between general contractor WorldSteel Group and investor GPPD Energy Co., Ltd. took place on October 19 at Becamex Binh Phuoc Industrial Park in the southern province of Binh Phuoc.

This is the first mercury-free manganese zinc alkaline battery factory in Vietnam and satisfies very high requirements on construction and finishing techniques.

The factory covers an area of ​​over 30,000 square metres with a total investment of $30 million, has a total capacity of 936 million products per year, with the first phase will have an annual capacity of 336 million products and the second phase 600 million products.

When the GPPD factory comes into operation, it will contribute to the economic development of Binh Phuoc, creating more jobs for the local workforce and stimulating supply chain development.

The GPPD factory has been built at Becamex Binh Phuoc Industrial Park by Singapore-owned GPPD Energy Co., Ltd. which has 66 years of manufacturing history of battery production.

WorldSteel Group acts as the general contractor of this project. Although early and mid-2020 was an extremely difficult time for project implementation. Not only in Vietnam but all over the world, COVID-19 implications have affected almost every aspect of life.

WorldSteel Group in Vietnam has been recognised as the first company in Vietnam and Asia to achieve the US IAS AC472 certificate.

Despite challenging times, the project has strictly followed its progress targets. WorldSteel's team and Board of Directors have maintained the highest service quality, best control, and excellent operations to ensure the progress and quality of each work item.

“Today, Vietnam's first alkaline battery factory has set sail. We have 66 years of battery manufacturing history and have the world's most advanced, fully automated alkaline battery production line,” said Huang Xiao Yun, chairwoman and general director of GPPD Energy Co., Ltd. said at the hand-over ceremony.

“The clean batteries produced will help meet the demand in the Vietnamese battery market and create green energy for Vietnam. We will also train outstanding Vietnamese industrial workers to contribute to local technology innovation and industrial development,” she noted.

WorldSteel Group in Vietnam has been recognised as the first company in Vietnam and Asia to achieve the US IAS AC472 certificate, an important certificate demonstrating the ability to meet stringent quality standards in the field of steel structures for industrial buildings, according to American quality standards.

The company is increasingly asserting its position in the domestic and international markets through engagement in key projects such as performing key parts in the Hoa Phat Iron and Steel Complex project, CPV Food – Binh Phuoc Becamex, Long Son Petrochemicals, China’s Tongwei Group's projects in Tien Giang and Hai Duong province, and also projects in Southeast Asian markets such as the 7-Eleven project in Thailand, the Philippines Coca-Cola Warehouse project, and a Steel Bridge in Singapore, among others.
