EC announces import quotas for farm produce from Viet Nam under EVFTA

The European Commission (EC) on Wednesday announced import quotas for some farm produce, including rice from Viet Nam in accordance with the European Union – Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA).

The Vietnam News Agency reported that Vietnamese farm produce, especially rice, would enjoy exemption of tariffs when imported into the EU. However, there would be quotas for every year.

According to the EC’s announcement, the quotas for poultry eggs would be 208.334 tonnes from August 1 (the day the trade deal takes effect) to December 31, and 500 tonnes per year from the next year.

The respective quotas for garlic are 167.668 tonnes and 400 tonnes, 2,083.334 tonnes and 5,000 tonnes for maize, 12,500 tonnes and 30,000 tonnes for tapioca, 4,791.688 tonnes and 11,500 tonnes for tuna, 208.334 tonnes and 500 tonnes for surimi, 8,333.334 and 20,000 tonnes for sugar, 166.668 tonnes and 400 tonnes for special sugar and 145.834 tonnes and 350 tonnes for mushrooms.

The quota for rice is 80,000 tonnes per year, including 20,000 tonnes for unmilled rice, 30,000 tonnes for milled rice and 30,000 tonnes for fragrant rice.

The EC also set specific import quotas for each type of rice for each period of the year in order to ensure the consumption and avoid the accumulation on the market. Specifically, the quota for unmilled rice from January 1 to March 31 is 10,000 tonnes, and 5,000 tonnes for each period from April 1 to June 30 and from July 1 to September 30.

For milled rice, the quota is 15,000 tonnes from January 1 to March 31, 7,500 tonnes from April 1 to June 30 and 7,500 tonnes from July 1 to September 30.

For fragant rice, the quota is 15,000 tonnes from January 1 to March 31, 7,500 tonnes from April 1 to June 30 and 7,500 tonnes from July 1 to September 30.
