GAS and SAB fail to support market

Shares declined on both Vietnamese exchanges during the morning trading session on Friday as major heavyweight stocks failed to support the market.

On the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange, the VN-Index closed the morning down 0.23 per cent at 940.93 points.

Liquidity was modest on Friday morning with nearly 73 million shares worth more than VND1.8 trillion (US$77 million) traded on the southern market.

Most large-cap stocks lost value and weighed down the market. Only five of the top 30 listed firms by market value and liquidity advanced while 23 declined. The other two were flat.

At the beginning of the trading session, PetroVietnam Gas JSC (GAS) and brewery Sabeco (SAB) rebounded sharply, pushing indexes up. During the session, GAS surged 4.2 per cent to VNĐ102,100 per share. SAB increased 2.9 per cent to VNĐ280,000 per share. But at the end of the trading, the increases of the two stocks were narrowed so they failed to support the indexes.

On the Ha Noi Stock Exchange, the HNX-Index decreased 0.57 per cent to end at 102.37 points.

The afternoon trading session starts at 1pm.
