Shares volatile, edge up on oil and gas stocks

Shares were volatile on Thursday morning in line with fluctuations of heavyweight stocks on the two markets.

The benchmark VN-Index on the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange inched up 0.06 per cent to 901.43 points.

On the Ha Noi Stock Exchange, the HNX-Index edged up 0.35 per cent to end at 101.55 points.

Over 86 million shares worth a combined VND1.9 trillion (US$80.3 million) were traded on the two bourses.

Oil and gas stocks recovered this morning.

The two biggest oil and gas firms, PV Gas (GAS) and Petrolimex (PLX), advanced 0.8 per cent and 1.3 per cent, respectively.

Other firms including PetroVietnam Drilling and Wells Service (PVD), PetroVietnam Technical Service (PVS) and PetroVietnam Drilling Mud increased between one per cent and three per cent.

Crude oil price rose one per cent on Wednesday after the Oganisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and its allies discussed the proposed reduction in output despite pressure from US President Donald Trump.

However, the market’s upward movement was restrained by declines of several major stocks including Vinamilk (VNM), Vingroup (VIC), Bao Viet Holdings (BVH), Vietcombank (VCB) and Hoa Phat Group.

The afternoon session starts at 1pm.
