Cellcard keeps crown as cell firms ranked on speed
A recent analysis of Cambodia’s top three cellular service providers found that Cellcard has retained its spot as the network with the highest download speeds in the country.
The report was released by wireless coverage mapping firm OpenSignal, which relies on users to download their mobile application and voluntarily submit data about their networks’ speed back to the company.
It analysed companies on six categories including 4G download speed, 3G download speed, download speed overall, 4G latency, 3G latency and 4G availability.
Cellcard took first place outright in four of the report’s six categories, only losing to Smart in the 4G latency category. All three providers tied for 4G availability, and Metfone took third place in the other five metrics.
In a statement released yesterday, Cellcard CEO Ian Watson credited improvements to the Cellcard network, which he said have resulted in a 400 percent increase in average mobile data usage over the past year.
Smart and Metfone have each made significant strides forward since the third-quarter analysis, OpenSignal’s report found, with Smart greatly increasing its download speeds and Metfone expanding its overall availability by nearly 15 percent, but the two fell short of Cellcard’s overall performance.
Smart CEO Thomas Hundt said his company was working to improve their network, noting that this year “another 80 million USD will be invested to expand and upgrade our 4.5G network to provide even better service quality for all Cambodians”.
The OpenSignal analysis is based on over 100 million data points collected from nearly 12,000 local cellular service devices last year between October 2 and December 31. OpenSignal did not provide specifics about how many devices were recorded for each operator, and has declined to provide those statistics in the past.
