Phu Quoc Island welcomes over 45,000 visitors over Labor Day holiday

More than 45,000 tourists visited Phu Quoc Island off southern Vietnam’s Kien Giang Province over the four-day national holiday from April 29 to May 2.

Tourists to Phu Quoc accounted for nearly 90 percent of Kien Giang’s tourism revenue during the holiday, according to Nguyen Van Sau, deputy director of the provincial Department of Tourism.

Vietnam’s salaried workers enjoyed a four-day holiday, starting Saturday, in commemoration of the reunification of Vietnam on April 30 and Labor Day on May 1.

A total of 45,456 travelers, 4,071 of which were foreigners, chose Phu Quoc Island, the largest in Vietnam, as their destination during this year’s holiday, a 25-percent and 46.9-percent increase, respectively, from 2016, said Sau.

Phu Quoc’s revenue from tourist services also saw an 11.9 percent surge compared to last year, at nearly VND70 billion (US$3.13 million), making up 90 percent of Kien Giang’s VND80 billion in tourism revenue.

Overall, the southern province welcomed around 200,000 visitors over the holiday, nearly 1.5 times more than last year.

Local attractions also reported an increase of 31.7 percent in their number of visitors.

Up to 80 percent of rooms at hotels and accommodation services in the districts of Ha Tien, Kien Hai, and Phu Quoc were booked for the holiday, with prices skyrocketing by15-20 percent compared to non-holiday rates.

According to Sau, Phu Quoc’s dominant contribution to the province’s tourist industry could be attributed to its many international-standard hotels and resorts as well as beautiful and primitive beaches.

Other ocean-bound activities such as squid fishing and coral diving are also a highlight of Phu Quoc’s tourism, Sau added.
