Brokerages, energy firms give local markets a boost

Shares rose in both local markets on Friday morning, boosted by brokerages and energy companies.

The benchmark VN Index on the HCM Stock Exchange gained 0.61 per cent to close at 731.41 points, after falling slightly in the previous session.

The HNX Index on the Ha Noi Stock Exchange added 0.79 per cent to end at 92.19 points. The northern market index had fallen by 0.5 per cent on Thursday.

Around 151 million shares worth VND3 trillion (US$133.5 million) were traded on the two local bourses.

The brokerage industry recorded the highest growth rate among 20 sectors with its index jumping 4.4 per cent.

Securities firms that made good gains include HCM City Securities (HCM), Saigon Securities (SSI), MB Securities (MBS), Sai Gon-Ha Noi Securities (SHS) and VNDirect Securities (VND).

Of these, HCM hit its daily trading limit of 6.9 per cent after the company on Friday lifted its restrictions on foreign ownership in its capital.

In the energy sector, shares of PetroVietnam Gas (GAS), PetroVietnam Drilling and Well Services (PVD) and PetroVietnam Technical Services (PVS) advanced, following a three-day rally of oil prices.

Among the nine listed banks, MBBank (MBB), Vietinbank (CTG), BIDV (BID), Vietcombank (VCB) and Asia Commercial Bank (ACB) gained.

The afternoon session starts at 1pm.
