Shares remain volatile, trading liquidity low

Shares were volatile in the two local bourses on Tuesday morning as investors remained cautious on worries that the markets would not recover in the short term.

The benchmark VN Index on the HCM Stock Exchange ended flat at 709.42 points. On Monday, Việt Nam’s key index had dropped 0.4 per cent.

The smaller HNX Index on the Ha Noi Stock Exchange fell 0.3 per cent to close at 88.15 points. It had closed 0.5 per cent down on Monday.

Market trading liquidity was low with around 101.7 million shares worth VND1.93 trillion (US$86 million) being traded.

The sharp drop in trading liquidity is a result of investor cautiousness on concerns that the market may not recover in the short term because of lack of business information and the upcoming national holiday.

Low investor confidence pulled large-cap stocks such as dairy producer Vinamilk (VNM), brewer Sabeco (SAB), Hoang Anh Gia Lai (HAG) and Eximbank (EIB) down.

Energy stocks also suffered, owing to a drop in global oil prices. Brent Crude finished Monday night trading at $51.6 a barrel, down 0.7 per cent from Friday.

The afternoon session starts at 1pm.
