PM wants Hoi An’s home province to be Vietnam’s tourism hub
Vietnam’s Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc believes Quang Nam, the central province home to the world-renowned Hoi An Ancient Town, has all the conditions necessary to become a major tourism center.
The Vietnamese head of government has demanded that the provincial authorities consider turning Quang Nam into an international tourism hub, after he chaired an investment conference there on Sunday.
“With all the current eco-social development in Quang Nam, why not set up a world-class tourism center here?” PM Phuc said.
The premier underlined that Quang Nam should aspire to breakthrough development in the future to ensure the local tourism sector becomes more profound and diverse, instead of “collecting admission fees to attractions.”
PM Phuc said Quang Nam, which used to be a poverty-stricken locality, now has an advantage over other central provinces thanks to its well developed infrastructure, including two airports at both ends of the province.
The province is home to Chu Lai Airport, not too far from Da Nang International Airport in the bordering city of Da Nang.
The premier also noted that Quang Nam has vast forested areas, a number of places of interest and the renowned Ngoc Linh ginseng.
“Then you have Hoi An Ancient Town, the My Son Sanctuary and all the forest and seas out there,” PM Phuc said.
“Let us turn Quang Nam into a major center of tourism.”
Hoi An Ancient Town and My Son Sanctuary, both UNESCO-recognized World Heritage Sites, are the must-see attractions in the province, besides Cua Dai beach and Cham Isle.
Besides the tourism potential, Sunday’s meeting also highlighted the economic strength of Quang Nam, powered by the Chu Lai Open Economic Zone.
The star of the Chu Lai EZ is Truong Hai Auto (THACO), which boasts the highest localization rate and largest revenue among all automakers in Vietnam.
THACO has invested VND60 trillion (US$2.68 billion) into Chu Lai, and posted some VND67 trillion ($2.99 billion) in consolidated revenue last year.
At the conference, Quang Nam authorities handed over the investment license to 32 projects, with a combined registered capital of $15.8 billion.
Also on Sunday, THACO turned the first sod on a new $535 million plant, capable of assembling 100,000 Madza brand cars a year, while realty giant Vingroup broke ground on Vinpearl Nam Hoi An, a luxury resort complex with a total investment of VND5 trillion ($223.21 million).
