Krungsri Bank teaches schoolchildren the basics of financial literacy

Krungsri Vientiane Branch and the Banking Institute are co-hosting the Krungsri Financial Literacy Simple to Learn' Equipping Youths with Financial Discipline and Money Management Skills.

The bright smiles and occasional bubbly laughter reflect children's happiness in Krungsri's CSR activities for primary school students.

As learning is not limited to the classroom, combined with the fact that financial know-how serves as the bedrock of a stable life, instilling financial knowledge in youths and helping them realise the importance of saving and spending are crucial for building a sustainable society. This is the inspiration for the Krungsri Financial Literacy' project.

The Krungsri Financial Literacy' project is a CSR project initiated by Krungsri Thailand in 2015 for the purpose of helping students learn how to save and spend prudently, including equipping them with financial discipline and money management skills since childhood.

Seeing that it is a programme which yields widespread benefits to youths and creates good financial discipline, Krungsri continued this project in 2016 under the Simple to Learn' concept in order to establish a strong foundation for a stable life and, ultimately, a sustainable future.

In 2016, the project was a success with Krungsri providing financial knowledge to 5,258 students at 92 schools in 27 provinces across Thailand and two schools in the Lao PDR. The first two sessions in the Lao PDR were held at Ban Arkard Elementary School in Vientiane and Sonxay Elementary School in Savannakhet late last year with very positive outcomes for the participating students.

The Krungsri Financial Literacy project aims to teach basic finance to elementary students from Grade 4 to Grade 6. The easy course content focuses on game-based learning, which is engaging and fun for children. Games and activities are divided into 5 bases: Need vs. Want, The Importance of Saving, Let's Shop Wisely, Recycling, and Krungsri's Genius, including a base where the Bank teaches students how to depositwithdraw money as well as the basics of interest rates.

The third participating school was Sathit Elementary School, Xangkhou Village, Xaythany District, with 47 Grade 5 student participants who learned about financial management through these game-based learning activities. The event was attended by Branch Manager of Krungsri Vientiane Branch, Ms Penpit Tongyingsiri, and Director of Sathit Primary School, Ms Bounthan Poungnavong.

What make this time special is that the Krungsri Vientiane branch held a Train the Trainers session in the morning for 20 volunteers from the Banking Institute where the volunteers learnt how to organise fun activities that also give basic financial knowledge for young children.

For afternoon sessions, the volunteers carried out activities with participating students under supervision of the Krungsri Bank team. We expect to organise at least three Financial Literacy sessions this year in both Vientiane and Savannakhet province, Marketing and Public Relations Manager of the Krungsri Vientiane Branch, Ms Bouphamany Chounramany, said.

As good citizens are the roots of social sustainability, Krungsri Laos branches are committed to help instilling financial discipline that will, in turn, promote social development.
