Four more wind power projects set to launch in Vietnam
Following the construction of a wind power plant in south-central Vietnam, four similar projects are set to break ground in the country’s central region and Central Highlands.
Construction of the 24 megawatt capacity Phu Lac Wind Power Plant was completed in November 2016 in the south-central province of Binh Thuan and seems to have paved a clear path for future clean energy projects.
Thuan Binh Wind Power JSC, the project’s developer, posted an investment capital worth more than VND1trillion (US$44 million) plant and seems poised to make similar moves in the near future.
According to Bui Van Thinh, director of the firm, four similar projects are expected to be executed in the next few years with a combined capacity of 500 megawatts.
A wind power project with a 30 megawatt capacity is scheduled to break ground in 2017 in the south-central province of Ninh Thuan, Thinh stated, adding that a 30-megawatt solar power plant is planned to be built near Phu Lac wind farm in 2018.
The other proposed projects are set to be carried out in Dak Lak and Gia Lai Provinces in the Central highlands, the company director continued, confirming that the combined cost of the four plants is estimated at US$2 billion.
An ecotourism model is also anticipated to be integrated into the Phu Lac wind power plant to provide an additional source of income for the firm, considering the country’s current cost of wind energy is rather low, about 7.8 cents per kilowatt, he elaborated.
The Binh Thuan Wind Energy Association previously requested that the central government and the Ministry of Industry and Trade raise the cost of clean energy to 9.5 cent per kilowatt.
Vietnam has set a goal to reach a wind power capacity of 800 megawatts by 2020 but has so far only accumulated a 160 megawatt capacity.
