Da Lat police seize ten tons of rancid fruit jam before Tet delivery
Police in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong confiscated a massive amount of rancid fruit jam, ready to be ‘magically’ transformed into delicious-looking sweets for the Tet holiday, in a warehouse raid in the provincial capital of Da Lat on Wednesday.
The warehouse owner, Nguyen Van Toan, was caught red-handed loading the molding jams onto delivery trucks when Lam Dong economic police officers arrived at the scene.
Officers identified a total of 10.38 metric tons of separate lemon, plum, and tangerine jams at the facility, bearing either Chinese labels or no labels at all.
Police say most of the jam is inedible, with each jar releasing water and foul smells.
Toan confessed to police that he sourced the jams from small suppliers in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, and planned to turn them into Da Lat-grown delicacies to sell during Tet, the Vietnamese Lunar New Year holiday that begins later this month.
