Japanese investors to assess potential of Lao agribusiness

A Japanese governmental organisation, the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO), will dispatch a business mission to southern Laos next month to discover new business opportunities in agriculture.

The mission will visit Champassak, Saravan and Xekong provinces, which have the highest potential for agricultural production.

A representative of the JETRO Vientiane office, Mr Kenichiro Yamada, said the group will consist of about 15 Japanese businesspeople from a wide variety of sectors such as food processing companies, fresh vegetable producers, traditional medicine producers and pesticide producers. Some are also interested in the wholesale of agricultural machinery to help increase crop yields.

Business matching between Lao agricultural companies and Japanese investorswill form new joint ventures to help the Lao agricultural industry add more value. Also, to make business start-ups easier, JETRO is talking with the Lao government about how to build a system of test cultivation on a low-cost and high-efficacy model.

Nowadays, Japanese investment in the agriculture sector is increasing for products like medicinal plants, cucumbers, mushrooms, strawberries, flowers, and cattle, among others.
