Markets close mixed, while VNM reaches new high

Vietnamese shares ended mixed in the early session, while insurance and brokerage firms helped to lift the markets.

 

The benchmark VN Index on the HCM Stock Exchange rose 0.3 per cent to close at 675.24 points.

The HNX Index on the Ha Noi Stock Exchange slid 0.5 per cent to reach 86.63 points.

Insurance companies were the largest gainers in the early session. Bao Viet Holdings (BVH) jumped 3.1 per cent, BIDV Insurance Corp (BIC) surged 5.5 per cent and Bao Minh Insurance Corp (BMI) added 1.4 per cent.

Brokerage firms such as Sai Gon Securities Inc (SSI), FIT Investment JSC (FIT) and BIDV Securities Inc (BSI) made gains. They increased between 1.3 per cent and 3.2 per cent.

Viet Nam Dairy Products JSC (VNM) gained two per cent to hit a new high at VND153,000 per share in the early session.

However, energy stocks weighed on the markets.

PetroVietnam Gas Corp (GAS) fell 1.5 per cent, and PetroVietnam Drilling and Well Service Corp (PVD) dropped 1.4 per cent.

Banks remained in negative territory, such as Asia Commercial Bank (ACB), Vietinbank (CTG) and Eximbank (EIB).

Investors traded 88.7 million shares, worth VND1.63 trillion (US$72.67 million).
