Asean Business Awards up for grabs

Both small and large business enterprises are urged to participate in the Asean Business Awards (ABA) 2016, with the winner to be announced in September this year.

The National Chamber of Commerce and Industry and KPMG Lao Co., Ltd. last week held a press conference on the awards.

The Asean Business Advisory Council (Asean-BAC) launched the Asean Business Awards (ABA) in 2007 to give recognition to enterprises that have contributed to the growth and prosperity of the Asean economy.

ABA was conceived to be the first of its kind in the region, with the dual objectives of recognising outstanding Asean enterprises, and to serve as a platform to spread information concerning the Asean Economic Community.

In addition, the awards spotlight promising small- and medium-d enterprises that have the potential to become global economic players.

Since it was first launched in 2007, ABA has recognised more than 60 companies throughout the region that excel in the categories of Growth, Employment, Innovation and Corporate Social Responsibility.

This year, however, Asean-BAC intends to expand the categories to include the Priority Integration Sectors of Asean element, as well as recognising outstanding young entrepreneurs and women entrepreneurs.

To ensure the high quality and independency of such a prestigious event, Asean-BAC engages a Strategic Partner each year to administer the implementation of the ABA Framework, shortlist the nominations submitted by companies, administer the Judges Meeting, and assist in promoting the event throughout the Asean region.

Laos will host this year's ABA and KPMG Lao Co., Ltd. was selected to be the strategic partner to ensure the competition is transparent, fair and professional in allocating awards to business enterprises, Vice President of LNCCI Mr Thanongsinh Kanlagna said. He urged business enterprisesto participate in this event.

This is the first year Laos has hosted this event and so far about 20 companies have applied for this award.

Applicants are able to download application forms from Website sbis2016.com and the closing of nominations is August 5.

This is a good opportunity for Lao business enterprises to participate as they will be able to compete with other countries, said Mr K Ganesan Kolandevelu, a representative of KPMG Lao Co., Ltd.

They may not only receive an award but will also learn how to improve themselves and how they can do better in competing with other companies in the region, he added.

Mr Kolandevelu said Lao companies are involved in hydropower development so they have experience in this sector compared to other companies in the region.

In addition, they have experience in the mining sector and wood related businesses so they should be able to compete in the Asean region.
