Container shipping route opens at Vung Ang port

A container shipping route from the Vung Ang port in the central province of Ha Tinh and accompanying services was officially put into use on May 19.

The route connects the Vung Ang port with Hai Phong City in the north and with Ho Chi Minh City in the south.

The route was developed by the coordination of the Ha Tinh Minerals and Trading Joint Stock Corporation (MITRACO), the Vietnam-Laos Vung Ang Port Joint Stock Company (VLP) and the Saigon New Port Corporation.

Truong Huu Trung, chairman of MITRACO's board of directors, said the inauguration of the shipping service was an initial step towards implementing a blueprint on developing logistics services in Ha Tinh by 2030 and also the Vung Ang logistics centre.

The first batches of goods, delivered on this route on the opening day itself, comprised 300 containers with 5,400 tonnes of cassava starch belonging the Vedan Vietnam Enterprise Corp. Ltd, which were transported from the Vung Ang port through Hai Phong to a port in China.

At present, the Vung Ang port consists of two wharfs. The VLP is building the third wharf at a cost of nearly VND1 trillion (US$44.8 million). The new facility will be able to handle ships of up to 45,000 DWT and container ships of 4,000 TEU.

The VLP is also buying specialised cranes and other equipment and is providing a variety of logistics services.
