Vietnamese startup community showcases solutions at FPT Tech Day

Held Wednesday in Ho Chi Minh City, FPT Tech Day 2016 enabled Vietnam’s startup community to meet with and showcase their solutions to local and international tech experts.

The event, organized by Vietnam’s leading tech firm FPT, also attracted a number of young visitors, seeking to discover the latest made-in-Vietnam apps and technologies.

Among the key foreign guests were Rajan Anandan, vice president and managing director of Google Southeast Asia and India, and Kirsten Gilbertson, public and private cloud sales lead with Microsoft in Asia-Pacific.

Some successful Vietnamese startups also attended the event, including mobile e-wallet MoMo and English pronunciation assistant app ELSA.

In March, M_Service, the operator of MoMo, received a combined US$28 million investment from Standard Chartered Private Equity, which invested $25 million, and Goldman Sachs, which put in an additional $3 million on top of its existing $5.75 million funding.

In the meantime, ELSA, or English Language Speech Assistant, co-developed by Vietnamese women Van Dinh Hong Vu and Ngo Thuy Ngoc Tu together with Dr. Xavier Anguera from Spain, was awarded first prize at the SXSWedu 2016 Launch Startup Competition in the U.S. last month.

Representatives of other popular Vietnamese startups such as YouNet Media, Haravan, Umbala, Gremsy, CyRadar and ANTS also attended the event.

FPT Tech Day 2016 also saw FPT open source some of its platforms at OpenFPT.vn to the startup community. One of the open-sourced platforms is the smart traffic system, which can be used to create apps including a license-plate recognition system, according to FPT.

Conferences with such themes as smart traffic, mobile payment, Internet security, artificial intelligence and e-commerce were also organized on the sidelines of the event.
