Vietstar Airlines waits for government approval

The transport ministry has asked the government to approve an air transport business licence for Vietstar Airlines Multirole Corporation (Vietstar Airlines).

Vietstar Airlines was established in 2010. It is a member of Vietnam Air Defence – Airforce, the Ministry of National Defence that specialises in passenger and cargo transport, aircraft repair and maintenance, aviation fuel supply and pilot training in Viet Nam.

The firm plans to use three aircraft such as Boeing 737 and Airbus 320 in the first five years.

According to the ministry's proposal, Vietstar Airlines will focus on domestic routes between the northern and southern areas of Viet Nam, and from Viet Nam to the Asian countries in the north and the ASEAN countries.

Baogiaothong.vn, a news website of the transport ministry, said the company had a registered capital of VND800 billion (US$35.8 million) as of March 31, 2015. The company needed VND47.3 billion to reach the minimum capital required by an international and domestic passenger and cargo carrier, as per a government decree issued in 2013.

Statistics of the Civil Aviation Authority of Viet Nam (CAAV) showed that the country has eight airlines including Vietnam Airlines, Jetstar Pacific Airlines, Vietnam Air Services Company (VASCO) and VietJet Air, in addition to Blue Sky Travel and Event Company Ltd, Hai Au Airline JSC and Green Planet Technology JSC.

General Director of CAAV Lai Xuan Thanh said to Dau tu Newspaper that CAAV would provide the right environment for Vietstar Airlines to conduct air transport services on domestic and international routes, but it would steer the building of a cargo carrier.

Viet Nam does not have any airline specialising in cargo transport services.

As of the end of 2015, Viet Nam had 131 aircrafts, with Vietnam Airlines having the largest fleet of 86 aircraft, following by VietJet Air with 25 and Jetstar Pacific with 11 units.
