Lao bank staff gain insight into crime prevention
Lao banking personnel and other government officials learnt more about crime prevention, safe payment methods and monetary issues at a talk on advanced banking technologies given by BPC Banking Technologies on Friday.
The talk was organised by the Information Technology Department of the Bank of the Lao PDR (BOL) in collaboration with BPC Banking Technologies, an experienced provider of open-systems electronic payment solutions.
The objective of the talk was to inform banking personnel and other government officials about crime prevention in banking, as well as introduce safe payment solutions.
BPC Banking Technologies explained its SmartVista system, a complete suite of fully integrated, end-to-end payments that deters criminals.
Director General of BOL's Information Technology Department, Mr Phanthong Kongvongsa, chaired the session at which specialists from BPC Banking Technologies explained some of the advanced technologies in use for banking payments.
The talk was attended by bank staff and officials from line ministries including the ministries of Public Security, and Posts and Telecommunications.
In his opening speech at the seminar, Mr Phanthong said banking technologies and systems had become globally developed and utilised. This meant banks in Laos were now providing much better options for customers, with the aim of reducing the use of cash.
“Today we see that many banks provide a wide range of services through mobile phones, the internet and other methods, which enable customers to access banking services wherever they are,” Mr Phanthong said.
He went on to say that the trend of making payments via mobile phones through banks was on the increase and more and more people in Laos use their ATM cards to deposit and withdraw cash.
“But using ATM cards for money transfers, withdrawals and deposits increases the risk of transactions being intercepted by criminals, and several cases have been reported in Laos recently,” Mr Phanthong said.
He said the seminar would give banking personnel an unde rstanding of current criminal issues and also recommend efficient solutions to the prevention of crime in banking.
“I hope that seminar participants will gain kno wledge and valuable lessons from the highly experienced specialists at BPC Banking Technologies and also lead the way in putting these methods into practice in the workplace,” Mr Phanthong added.
