The Hongsa Mine Mouth Power Project in Xayaboury provinc e has earned more than 136.8 billion kip (over US$16.8 million or 600 million baht) since the plant's first and second generators began producing electricity for sale last year.
Last year t he plant sold 1,522 GWh of electricity to the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) and 8.46GWh to Electricite Du Laos (EDL). 1.9 million tonnes of coal was consumed in the process, according to the Lao Holding State Enterprise (LHSE).
The first generator became operational in June, while the second came on line in November. A third generator is expected to become operational next month.
The Lao government expects to receive over US$2.3 billion in taxes from Hongsa Power Company Limited during the 25 year concession.
The company expects to spend US$3.7 billion on construction in total. When finished, the plant will have a total capacity of 1,878 MW or 626MW per generator, and use 14.3 million tonnes of lignite a year.
The 25-year land concession covers 76.2 square kilometres and runs from 2016-2041.
Under the agreement, 1,473 MW of electricity will be sold to EGAT, and 100MW to EDL.
Banpu Power Limited and Ratchaburi Electricity Generating Holding Public Company Limited both hold a 40 percent share in the project, while Lao Holding State Enterprise holds the remaining 20 percent.
Hongsa Power Company Limited is training families who had to relocate to make way for the plant in modern methods of agriculture, livestock breeding and handicraft production, to help them earn a living.
The project's environment unit is carrying out joint activities with the local community and continues to check environmental conditions on site.
