VN shares close mixed, while energy stocks rise

Vietnamese shares ended mixed this morning on the two local markets, while energy stocks made gains, riding on higher global oil prices.

The benchmark VN Index on the HCM Stock Exchange closed almost flat at 579.32 points, while the HNX Index on the Ha Noi Stock Exchange was down 0.3 per cent to end at 79.74 points.

The local energy stock index was up 0.4 per cent after these companies benefited from rising global oil prices. The American benchmark crude West Texas Intermediate (WTI) jumped 2.2 per cent to trade at US$37.84 this morning.

PetroVietnam Gas Corporation (GAS) was up 1.1 per cent, PetroVietnam Technical Services Corporation (PVS) rose 1.2 per cent and PetroVietnam Construction Corporation (PVX) jumped 3.2 per cent.

In addition, the stock market was supported by other large-cap stocks such as property developer Vingroup JSC (VIC), which gained 1.8 per cent, and insurer Bao Viet Holdings (BVH), which was up 0.9 per cent.

Meanwhile, the banking sector had a bad trading session. Vietcombank (VCB) inched down 2.3 per cent and Vietinbank (CTG) fell 0.5 per cent.

The two local markets traded more than 76 million shares, worth VND1.2 trillion ($52.3 million).
