Central rate up, commercial banks drop rates

The State Bank of Viet Nam (SBV) levelled the interbank exchange rate in the last two days while local commercial banks reduced theirs.

On Jan 12, the SBV raised the VND rate per dollar by two dong from Monday's rate, amounting to VND21,913 per dollar.

Meanwhile, the exchange rate of commercial banks continued to decline further between another 30 dong and 40 dong.

In other details, Vietcombank, BIDV, ACB and DongABank listed buying/selling rates for the greenback between VND22,380 and VND22,450. The rates were 40 dong lower than yesterday's rates in these banks.

Also, after dropping 40 dong for either transaction, VietinBank bought the dollar at VND22,385 and sold it at VND22,455.

The exchange buying and selling rates at Sacombank was VND22,370 and VND22,450, while in Eximbank it was VND22,360 and VND22,450.

Techcombank sold a dollar at the highest price among the commercial banks at VND22,470.

At the margin of +/-3 per cent from the SBV's central rate, the ceiling rate of the day was VND22,570, while the floor rate was VND21,255.

At the Quoc Trinh Jewellery Company in Ha Trung Street, the most popular forex trading point for the unofficial market in Ha Noi, the dollar was bought at VND22,530 and sold at VND22,560.

Meanwhile, after rising for several days, gold prices declined to between VND50,000 ($2.2) and VND60,000 ($2.6) for each tael, or 1.205 ounce, on January 12. The Saigon Jewellery Joint Stock Company sold one tael of SJC gold for VND33.12 million ($1,475), while Bao Tin Minh Chau Jewellery and DOJI Jewellery and Gems sold their gold at VND33.05 million ($1,472).

In the global market, gold sold for $1,095.1 per ounce or $1,319 per tael. Thus, the price of one tael of gold in Viet Nam was still $156 higher than in the world market.
