Cement plant soon to begin production in Thailand

BMC Cement Industry Factory (Lion Brand) in Nakhon Phanom province, Thailand, owned by a Lao private-investment company based in Khammuan province, will go into production by next month, according to the group's chairman.

Under the ownership of the Souksomboon Group, BMC Cement Industry Factory (Lion Brand) plans to supply cement products to various provinces of Thailand and Laos during AEC integration.

Construction of the plant started in 2011. Once the production of cement begins, it will be able to produce a high grade of cement which can command a large market share as the AEC unfolds.

President of the Souksomboon Group, Mr Chittakorn Souksomboon told local media recently that construction of the factory is expected to be complete by February and the production process will be switched on in the same month.

“We [as the cement maker] are confident we can supply a high grade of cement for the development of infrastructure, mega projects and hydropower plants in line with international standards,” he said.

According to a previous report, the Souksomboon Group is also investing 1,500 million baht in a cement factory in Nakhon Phanom province, which will have a production capacity of 1,500 tonnes a day or up to 600,000 tonnes a year.

BMC Cement Industry's new factory aims to increase the efficiency of the cement industry during AEC competition and to be a leading cement maker in the upper eastern region of Thailand.

A high grade of limestone to be used in the production process will be imported from mines at the concession quarry in Khammuan province, Laos, to supply the cement factory and produce good quality cement.

In Laos alone, the rapid growth of economic development, and consequently demand for cement is on the rise, especially in regards to the construction and restoration of more than 60 hydropower plants nationwide.

According to a recent report from the Lao Cement Producers' Association, currently there are 10 cement factories in operation, with a total production capacity of about 3.84 million tonnes a year.

However the country may see a growth in cement production capacity at a rate of up to 10.64 million tonnes a year in the near future as the government has granted approvals for many investors to conduct cement production studies in Laos over the past years.

Several cement factories are under construction in the districts of Khounkham, Nhommalath, Hinboun and Mahaxay in Khammuan province.

In addition, construction projects under local and foreign funded companies are carrying out raw material supply studies to be used in their cement plants.
