Trade fair highlights three nations' products, tourist attractions
Pakxe district, Champassak province: A trade fair opened here on Tuesday to promote Lao, Cambodian and Vietnamese businesses and tourism along with trade contacts and entrepreneurial exchange.
The trade fair, which runs until Friday, is part of activities to mark the 10th meeting of the Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam Triangle Development Area Joint Coordination Committee.
Consumer goods, clothing, handicrafts, furniture, traditional medicine and tourism products are on display at about 290 booths.
Nine of the 10 districts in Chamapassak province are taking part in the fair to exhibit goods made under the One District, One Product scheme.
Tourism destinations in Laos are proving popular, attracting the interest of large numbers of people.
Deputy Director General of the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism's Tourism Marketing Department, Ms Sengsoda Vanthanouvong, who led the opening of the department's booth on Monday, said many people had visited the booth to pick up brochures and guidebooks.
“All the brochures on display have been taken by visitors so we've had to keep topping them up to meet demand,” she said.
More than 530,000 tourists visited Champassak province last year, 78,000 people visited Saravan, 26,000 visited Xekong, and there were around 154,000 tourist arrivals in Att apeu.
A diversity of tourist destinations featuring nature, culture and history are on display at the fair, while the four southern provinces are promoting their recently launched tourism destination brand: Southern Laos, Charming by Nature.
Deputy Director of Saravan province's Department of Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr Bounkong Ketthongkham, said the province had an abundance of scenic areas but road access was poor.
He hoped the development of facilities would lead to an increase in visitors to the province as numbers had risen since 2012 following the government's Visit Laos Year campaign.
