PPAP cargo throughput up despite road rivalry
Cargo traffic through Phnom Penh’s Autonomous Port grew more than 6 per cent for the first nine months of 2015, with around 108,700 TEUs of goods passing through the port, according to data released by the port yesterday.
Hei Bavy, general director of Phnom Penh Autonomous Port (PPAP), said that while cargo passage may have increased at the port, PPAP was seeing increasing competition from land logistical services.
“In general, we have more competitors on the road, which hindered growth at the the port,”he said.
Despite the increased competition, Bavy said the port could see a 10 per cent increase in goods passing through the port by the end of this year.
This growth, Bavy said, will be further fuelled once the business completes its listing on the Cambodia Securities Exchange.
“We could say that there will be more companies joining from the private sector and that the port will gain new growth,” he said.
PPAP will be the second state-owned enterprise to be listed on the bourse, after the Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority, and could list as early as next month.
“We are following our plans,” Bavy said. “SECC board members will convene soon and we will follow our usual steps.”
PPAP, located on the Mekong River in Kien Svay district, about 30 kilometres east of Phnom Penh, is Cambodia’s second-largest port.
