Honeywell awards scholarships to leading Vietnamese students

The Honeywell UOP business under US-based technology and manufacturing giant Honeywell has just awarded 15 scholarships to students at leading Vietnamese universities, further extending the company’s efforts to boost education in the field of chemical engineering and refining technology in the Southeast Asian country.

The 15 scholarships were awarded to five students each from PetroVietnam University, Hanoi University of Science, and Ho Chi Minh University of Technology, raising to 45 the number of scholarships awarded to students over the past three years by Honeywell UOP, a recognised global leader in refining and petrochemical technology.

In addition to the scholarship programme, Honeywell in 2013 partnered with PetroVietnam to establish an Automation College at PetroVietnam University, donating hardware and software from Honeywell Process Solutions to help students learn advanced process control systems hand on.

“Honeywell is a committed partner to Vietnam working with leading universities to teach and training the next generation of chemical engineers and operators,” said Jim Rekoske, chief technology officer and vice president, research and development at Honeywell UOP.

“The Honeywell UOP scholarships with these leading universities have allowed 30 students a unique opportunity to advance their skills and knowledge while contributing to the advancement of the oil refining, gas processing and petrochemical industries in Vietnam,” Rekoske added.

As part of the scholarship programme, the company has each year awarded four-year scholarships to 15 students. At the end of the fourth year of studies, one scholarship recipient from each university is invited to intern at Honeywell UOP’s headquarters near Chicago during the following summer.

“My internship at Honeywell UOP’s headquarters in the US was a remarkable experience in my life”, said Vo Viet Tri, a student from PetroVietnam University who recently finished 8-week internship at the headquarters.

“From solving technical challenges and gaining practical project training to improving English communication in a diversified cultural setting, I learned a lot new things everyday. Now I came back to Vietnam after my internship. I will apply everything I learned from the US internship back to my work and life in Vietnam, contributing to the development of our country,” Tri noted.

Honeywell officially started operations in Vietnam in 2005 with offices in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. Technology from Honeywell UOP is being used in PetroVietnam’s Dung Quat refinery, which is the first refinery to be built in Vietnam.

Honeywell also provides a range of solutions and technology in Vietnam, including avionics systems, power equipment and parts for aircraft engines, security systems, process control solutions, building automation solutions and specialty materials.

“Honeywell’s technologies and products are helping to improve a range of industry in Vietnam,” said Mai Trang Thanh, president, Honeywell Indochina. “We already see how this is benefitting the students and the universities and developing the nation’s petrochemical capabilities.”
