Shares advance despite low liquidity

Shares edged higher this morning on the two exchanges, but liquidity continued to decline due to rising investor caution.

In HCM City, the VN-Index added 0.25 per cent to close at 574.16 points, while the HNX-Index on the Ha Noi exchange added 0.37 per cent to end at 78.76 points.

The overall market condition was negative, with almost 26 per cent of the total 676 stocks rising and 22.5 per cent falling, while the rest closed unchanged.

Large-cap stocks performed better, as shown in a modest rise of 0.2 per cent of the VN30, which tracks the top 30 shares by market value and liquidity.

Liquidity was very low, as just 74.5 million shares worth VND997 billion (US$44.3 million) were traded on the two markets by the end of the day.

Woodmaker Duc Long Gia Lai Group (DLG) was temporarily leading the trading with five million of its shares being exchanged, the most active stock nationwide. Its share price climbed three per cent to stand at VND6,900 each.

The afternoon session will start at 1pm.
