Viet Nam produces image compression core
The Integrated Circuit Design Research and Education Centre (ICDREC) announced on July 9 that it had produced the JPEG 2000 compression IP core.
JPEG is an international standard for compression of images that is used in various fields, such as the health sector and geodetic surveying. It is also used in devices such as high-quality monitoring cameras.
The production of the core is part of a major national science and technology programme chaired by the Centre, which is under Vietnam National University HCMC.
ICDREC Director Ngo Duc Hoang said the creation of the IP core would enable the Centre to own the JPEG 2000 image compression technology.
"There are some six companies in the world providing JPEG 2000 IP cores, and this is the first time Viet Nam has done it. The production of the core is an important step in the process of the Vietnamese integrated circuit industry acquiring technology and design know-how," he said.
The made-in-Viet Nam IP core allows devices to compress 16-bit greyscale images and still images composed of 16 million pixels. It can also compress high-definition motion pictures at a speed of 24 frames per second.
In time, the Centre will research and produce image processors that can be used in products and services requiring high-resolution and greyscale images.
