Lao, Japanese officials review capacity building project

Lao and Japanese officials met on Wednesday to review the progress of a project titled ‘Capacity Building for Private Sector Development and Japanese Investment in Laos.'

The five-year project is being run by the Laos-Japan Human Resource Development Institute and is a collaboration between the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the National University of Laos (NUOL).

The review meeting took place at NUOL and was attended by the Chief Representative of the JICA Laos Office, Mr Koichi Takei, and representatives from the Embassy of Japan to Laos, Ministry of Education and Sports, and Ministry of Planning and Investment.

NUOL Vice President, Associat e Prof. Dr Saykhong Sayn asine, a supervisor of the project, said the Laos-Japan Human Resource Development Institute has been a very good symbol of friendship and cooperation between JICA and the university an d between the Japanese and Lao governmen ts.

It is regarded as a common asset between the Japanese and Lao governments and peoples. In light of the success of the previous project, a new five-year cooperation project between JICA and NUOL was launched in September last year and will run until August 2019.

Associate Prof. Dr Saykhong said the progress made over the last four to five months indicated that the Laos-Japan Human Resource Development Institute had made a good start and the project was running smoothly in terms of capacity developme nt and intellectual exchange.

Through continuous hard work and effort, he believed the institute would continue to grow and become a hub of regional cooperation in business development, academia, and Japanese language and culture in the near future.

The review meeting was important, not just for discussion about the project, but also to talk about future plans to maintain the positive development of the project, he added.

He hoped the project would be fruitful and contribute to the growth of the Lao economy and the private sector, especially by promoting Japanese investment, as well as building up the academic sector and cultural activities in Laos.
