Star Telecom celebrates five years

The Star Telecom Company (Unitel) has been developing its communications network and service provision to improve its customer experience.

The company last week celebrated its fifth anniversary in Vientiane, in recognition of its rapid growth which is paving the way for further expansion in the future.

The ceremony was attended by the Minister and Deputy Minister of Post and Telecommunications, Mr Hiem Phommachanh and Mr Thansamay Kommasith, the Minister to the Government Office and Head of the Government Office, Dr Sonexay Siphandone, the Minister of Industry and Commerce, Ms Khemmani Pholsena, company representatives and relevant officials from Laos and Vietnam.

Since the beginning the company's revenue and the number of subscribers has increased each year according to reports.

In the years 2009 to 2013 the company earned 88, 426, 890 billion kip and 1,270 billion kip respectively and is expecting this to rise to 1,652 billion kip this year.

The number of subscribers started a t 300,000 in 2009, then grew to 800,000, 1.5 million, 1.8 million and 2.1 million in the years to 2013, while in the first eight months of this year the figure has risen to 2.3 million.

In five years the company has submitted tax to the government of 1.445 billion kip, Chairman of the Executive Board of Star Telecom Company, Mr Oulaha Thongvantha said at the ceremony.

The company has registered capital for business operations of US$60 million, and has current assets worth almost US$300 million, he reported.

The com pany has 143 service centres around the country and more than 22,000 dealer shops and provides a signal covering all districts in the country and 92 percent of the popula tion.

The Telecom sector has become one of the leading income earners for the national budget because of the contribution of some of the companies in it.
