Ministry separates roles to boost business growth

The Ministry of Industry and Commerce is stepping up its separation of responsibilities for each department in an effort to ensure they are properly prepared for helping boost the effectiveness of economic development.

Deputy Prime Minister Somsavat Lengsavad, who is in charge of economic production and transportation, recently advised the Ministry of Industry and Commerce to assign specific responsibilities to each department and to the Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

“The two sectors should know their respective areas of responsibility to avoid duplication of effort and ensure the work can be done successfully,” he said.

In his talk, he also called for the heads of various departments to think about how they should identify appropriate policies to boost business connectivity.

Minister of Industry and Commerce Ms Khemmani Pholsena also stated that over the past few months the ministry had been working to assign the various roles of each ministerial department. She also gave details of the assignment of responsibility involving the appointment of line director generals for each department, ensuring that business promotion is being achieved and work is on the right track under the Party and government guidelines.

Deputy Prime Minister Somsavat Lengsavad is now responsible for four different ministries, Energy and Mines, Agriculture and Forestry, Public Works and Transport and Industry and Commerce.

During his recent meeting with senior officials at the ministry, Mr Somsavat also heard about progress on the specific duties of several departments with regard to their significant contribution to socio-economic development.
