Over 1,202 GWh to be generated in last six months
Electricite du Laos (EDL) plans to increase electricity production to more than 1,202 GWh in the last six months this year for local supply and export to neighbouring countries.
The plan was recently released at an EDL meeting to review successful results over the past six months and set plans for the last six months of 2014 under the chairmanship of the Minister of Energy and Mines, Mr Soulivong Daravong.
EDL plans to generate more than1,202 GWh in the last six months which will achieve 101.09 percent of annual plan, but we still need to purchase 3,018 GWh of electricity from abroad, EDL Managing Director Mr Sisavath Thiravong reported at the meeting.
We will sell over 306 GWh to neighbouring countries and supply 2,530 GWh of electricity locally, accounting for over 1,627 billion kip or about US$21.13 million, he added.
Mr Sisavath said in the first six months EDL had generated over 738.25 GWh of electricity from 26 hydropower plants nationwide, or 102.97 percent of plan.
We purchased 2,575 GWh of electricity amounting to 307.66 billion kip, about US$91.91 million, or 103.51 percent of plan compared to the first six months in the previous year.
EDL sold 34.26 GWh abroad and supplied the domestic market with more than 2,051 GWh.
According to EDL, there are 26 hydropower plants nationwide currently, with installed generation capacity of 2,980.61 MW.
These include seven hydropower plants belonging to independent power producers (IPPs) with installed capacity of 2,580 MW, five hydropower plants of small power producers (SPPs) with installed capacity of 9.38 MW, seven hydropower plants of EDL-Gen with installed capacity of 387 MW, and another seven hydropower plants of EDL with installed capacity of 4.23 MW.
As of today there are 145 districts across the country of which 144 have access to electricity, or 99.31 percent. Out of 8,508 villages there are 6,961 with access to electricity, which is 81.82 percent, and in 1,108,516 families there are 958,580 families with access to electricity or 86.47 percent.
