CAMCE Laos launches luxury resort project in Luang Prabang

A Lao-Chinese joint venture has begun construction of a luxury resort and spa in Luang Prabang to meet the demand of high class tourists in the world heritage town.

CAMCE Investment Lao, the joint venture between the Chinese state owned enterprise CAMCE Engineering (CAMCE) and Lao Krittaphong Group, last week held a ceremony to unveil the US$40 million tourism project.

Luang Prabang Governor, Dr Khampheng Saysompheng and a number of senior company officials attended the event.

The construction of the Anantara Resort and Spa in Xiengkeo village, 10 minutes drive from the Luang Prabang city centre began at the end of last month and will take about 18 to 24 months to complete. The resort and spa will feature 100 traditional style resort rooms on 6.3 hectares of land, located on the bank of the Mekong.

The company said the construction of the largest tourism facility project in Laos will not only create a good business opportunity for the company but also contribute to the development of tourism in Luang Prabang, which is seeing rising demand for top quality tourism services.

Luang Prang is one of the top tourist destinations in Laos thanks to its world heritage status.

According to a report from Luang Prabang provincial authorities, foreign tourist arrivals to Laos in 2013 reached 3,779,490 visitors for the year, but the biggest number of those foreign tourists was from Thailand, r eaching over 2 million people rising from 1.9 million people in 2012. This is followed by Vietnam (910,164) and China (245,003).

Officials said the number of Chinese tourists to Laos will increase over next few years as Laos has opened direct flights to major Chinese cities. Chinese tourists also have high purchasing power, which can contribute to Laos' tourism industry.
