Vietnamese firms are among top 500 Asia-Pacific retailers

Five Vietnamese companies have been listed among the top 500 retailers in the Asia- Pacific region in 2014, Retail Asia Publishing Pte Ltd and Euromonitor (Asia) Pte Ltd have announced.

The five retailers include the Saigon Union of Trading Cooperatives, the Big C supermarket network, the Nguyen Kim Trading Joint Stock Company, the Saigon Jewelry Company Ltd and the Mobile World Joint Stock Company. Last year, they earned revenues of US$1,105 million, $534 million, $490 million, $487 million and $395 million, respectively.

Retail Asia Publishing Pte Ltd, one of leading companies in providing news about retailers, has coordinated with Euromonitor International to rank the top 500 retailers from 14 Asia-Pacific economies, namely Australia, China and its territories of Hong Kong and Taiwan, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand and Viet Nam.

The retailers, which have made it to the Top 500, have a combined revenue of $1.035 trillion, down nearly three per cent from the previous year, due to a weakening yen. The decline in combined sales was primarily caused by the weakening exchange rate of major Asian currencies against the US dollar, which was the common denominator used for the Top 500 ranking.

The organisers also ranked the top ten retailers of every economy, based on revenue, growth rate, area for retailing business and the number of shops.

Viet Nam's top ten retailers include the five companies mentioned above and Phu Nhuan Jewelry JSC, Pico JSC, Parkson Trade Centre, Vien Thong A Import Export Trading Production Corp and Tran Anh Digital World JSC, which have revenues of $255 million, $156 million, $133 million, $102 million and $95 million respectively.

Japan still dominates the top 10 positions in the Top 500 Ranking, but China has officially overtaken Japan with the overall highest number of entries. China's share in the Top 500 list has continuously grown from 19 per cent in 2009 to over a 31 per cent in 2013.

The three most distinguished retailers of each country will receive gold, silver and bronze prizes at the award ceremony to be held in Singapore in November this year.
