Vientiane to build new water plant
A new Vientiane water supply plant construction project, in the Thadeua area, is set to commence early next year after more than a year-long project feasibility study.
The project concession agreement was signed on June 6 between the Vientiane water supply operator Nam Papa Nakhone Luang and Vientiane Automation and Solution Engineering Co. Ltd (VASE).
“The project, in Hadxaifong district, will have an investment of around 152 billion kip (US$19 million),” the Project Manager, Mr Sisamone Kongmany, said last week.
The project developers will also discuss and create a detailed design, which will take about six months.
The agreement gave VASE the green light to go ahead with the construction of the plant and operate the project for 35 years.
“The project construction will take approximately 24 months to complete, VASE will run the project from 2016 to 2051 with the opportunity it extend the agreement for another 15 years,” Mr Sisamone said.
Currently Nam Papa Nakhone Luang has four water supply plants, already producing water at their full capacities. The plants are not able to supply enough water to the public due to the population increase, rapid expansion and developments in the city.
Nam Papa Nakhone Luang's Deputy General Manager Ms Pheuaneseng Xaynakham said the current four water supply plants can produce around 180,000 cubic metres per day.
Mr Sisamone said the plant would help relieve the demand for water supply.
According to the initial design, the plant will have a total capacity intake of 40,000 cubic metres of water per day, with the water coming from the Mekong River.
“It will take about 21,000 cubic metres per day in the first phase of the project,” Mr Sisamone said.
The project construction will include the systems of coagulation, flocculation, sediment ation, filtration and an underground reservoir.
Once the project is complete, it will link the former Vientiane water supply operator's pipe to facilitate water supply in the district. This will include the Dongphousy econ omic area.
VASE Managing Director Mr Senglaty Savankham said at the signing ceremony that the agreement was signed after the two companies signed a memorandum of understanding to conduct a feasibility study in January last year.
Currently the water supply in Vientiane is inadequate to meet the public's demand. The new plant is a necessity and the construction needs to begin quickly.
“Once the plant construction is complete, the water will then be sold to Nam Papa Nakhone Luang and supplied to the community,” Mr Senglaty said
