Shares post modest gains as investor optimism grows

Shares managed to close higher this morning on both the stock exchanges, as investors were less pessimistic and reduced the selling pressure.

On the HCM Stock Exchange, the VN-Index gained 0.32 per cent to stand at 534.77 points, with the losers outnumbering the gainers by 122 to 75.

Blue chips tumbled, however, as the VN30, which tracks the top 30 shares by market value and liquidity, fell by 0.15 per cent to end at 588.45 points.

Almost 63 million shares, worth VND740 billion or US$35 million, were traded by the end of the morning.

The FLC Group (FLC) continued to be the most active stock with 9.53 million shares being traded, and rising by 6.74 per cent to close at VND9,500 a share.

On the Ha Noi bourse, the HNX-Index also inched 0.16 per cent up to finish at 72.76 points.

The market sentiment was negative, however, with 70 shares gaining, 91 losing and 208 closing flat.

Trading was sluggish as over 39 million shares, worth VND295 billion or $14 million, were exchanged.

The PetroVietnam Construction Corp (PVX) was the leading stock here with 8.56 million shares changing hands at VND4,600 per share.

The afternoon session will resume at 1pm.
