Lao Telecom projects revenue boost

The Lao Telecommunications Company (LTC) plans to increase its income from services in the country by almost 7.2 percent this year over last year.

The company last year earned 1,104 billion kip and this year its aim is 1,183 billion kip, Lao Telecom Director General Mr Thongsay Sanexaya reported at the company's annual meeting on Friday.

“We expect to earn a net profit of about 171 billion kip after contributing 347 billion kip to national revenue,” he said.

Last year the company earned a net profit of 118.8 billion kip after adding 298.5 billion kip to national revenue, Mr Thongsay said.

The company also announced that it invested about 218 billion kip (US$27.2 million) in service improvements and network expansion last year.

LTC provided cross border services between Laos and overseas to over 60 countries through voice systems, data (GPRS), 3G and ISMS and completed expansion of 35 new customer service centres around the country.

The company also offered loyalty benefits back to it's customers through ‘scratch for luck' programmes and second chance draws.

Through these programmes, the company has presented 4 vehicles including three Chevrolet pickups and one Hyundai car along with other different prizes worth 12 billion kip.

The company has supplied information to customers through its call centre, 101 number and one stop service in accordance with international standard management system ISO 9001:2008.

LTC currently has a 42.4 percent slice of the Lao telecommunications market, with 1.2 million mobile phone customers, 47,000 ‘table phone' users, more than 76,000 internet subscribers and has issued more than 100,000 new phone numbers.

In social responsibility, the company donated more two billion kip to help support government assisted education programmes.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Minister of Post and Telecommunications, Mr Thansamay Kommasith.

Lao Telecom was established as a joint venture in 1996, with the Lao government holding a 51 percent share and Shenington Investments Private Company of Thailand holding 49 percent, for a pre-defined 25-year term.

The company has grown rapidly in recent years, after having just 100,000 subscribers in 2002.

Lao Telecom aims to improve services at customer service centres and through its dealers, to ensure services are up to speed in rural areas. Laos' other four telecom operators are Enterprise Telecommunications Lao, Star Telecom, VimpelCom Lao Co Ltd and Sky Telecom.
