Model family products exhibition to boost ODOP

A total of 23 business units, run by families identified by city authorities as potential ODOP (one district one product) candidates and known as model families, from the nine districts of Vientiane are displaying their products at Lao-ITECC in the first exhibition for Vientiane model families' products hoping to penetrate better into the local market.

The exhibition opened yesterday and will continue until February 2, aiming to discover which products have the potential to represent the villages and districts through the ODOP scheme.

The event will also work towards establishing product producer groups that can be created out of the 150 model families identified in the capital thereby strengthening their business units to help them succeed in the marketplace, the Vientiane industry and Commerce Department Director General, Mr Berlin Phetchanthalath, said at the opening ceremony.

Exhibited products include organically grown produce, processed food, handicrafts and other model family products that have the potential to develop into ODOP recognised businesses representing their district, he said.

The event is one of the activities under the ODOP promotion project, which is the responsibility of the Vientiane Industry and Commerce Department.

The department, in cooperation with the Ministry of Industry and Commerce and district authorities, has followed the progress of new family businesses as they are established, collecting information on their products with a view to helping them develop, said Mr Berlin.

“When we announced the national ODOP concept we started here with four products in three districts of Vientiane, Sisattanak, Chanthabouly and Naxaithong.”

The department will continue to promote and award the ODOP logo in every one of the city's nine districts, he said.

At the exhibition, attendees can enjoy buying different kinds of products including clothing, dry foods, drinks, kitchen utensils and home decorations.

The opening was attended by Vientiane's Vice Major, Mr Anouphab Tounalom, along with officials and authorities from the different districts in Vientiane.
