Lao architects fair eyes technical cooperation in region

The ALACE Expo 2014 of the Association of Lao Architects and Civil Engineers (ALACE) was opened at Lao-ITECC in Vientiane yesterday in an effort to raise the profile, roles and duties of the association.

The four day expo, scheduled to close on February 23, has attracted more than 100 booths that feature construction materials and equipment from Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, the Republic of Korea and the host country Laos .

Speaking at the opening ceremony ALACE President Mr Phonexay Southiphong said this year's fair has the special theme of ‘The ways towards the Asean Economic Community'.

“This slogan is suitable for the current development in real estate and urbanisation,” he said.

“Challenges to be faced in the near future such as the opening of free trade areas in the Asean region will soon feature in the years to come,” Mr Phonexay said.

The fair is presenting works by architects and civil engineers from domestic and international members. It allows the participants to view past years' achievements in housing construction projects, urban plans, communication and transportation.

Almost 150 booths from more than 100 companies, both domestic and international, are displaying construction materials, household goods and advanced technologies for construction.

A technical seminar will be held today in a bid to spread the message of new technologies and innovation for modern construction. This seminar will be conducted by professional instructors from several leading foreign companies.

Mr Phonexay said the National Congress of ALACE will be held on February 24 after the expo finishes.

The congress will be chaired by the Minister of Public Works and Transport, Mr Sommad Pholsena, who is also the Honourary President of ALACE. More than 200 representatives from members of ALACE from the provinces around the country will be attending.

On the afternoon of the same day, senior professional architects of Thailand, Malaysia and Vietnam will be invited to share their experience in a seminar entitled ‘The ways towards the Asean Economic Community'.

“This important seminar will enable the instructors to pass on their knowledge and professional skills to the various members of ALACE so that they understand better how to assess a person's ideas, intelligence and ability, especially for the architects, engineers, constructors and students,” Mr Phonexay said.

The ALACE Fair Expo is the leading and largest architect and design event in Laos, attended by architectural luminaries, design experts, affluent potential consumers and the media.

At yesterday's official opening ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Somsavat Lengsavad, invited foreign guests and other senior Lao government officials were present.
