A young CD seller discovers his dream

The government is encouraging young people to open businesses as one measure to create jobs and income.

Government policy also aims to create business units, which will help the government to enlarge its revenue collection base so it can gather more revenue to meet the expenditure and investment demands of the country.

A 24 year old man, Mr Nikone Ninchalern is one college graduate who decided not to seek employment with the government or private sector but to open his own business instead.

“I think I can earn more money from selling CDs and DVDs than working for companies. I also have more free time. I do not have to follow orders from others,” he said.

“I do not want to become an employee of another company because I want to be my own boss.”

Mr Nikone obtained a degree from Mexay Finance College in Vientiane five years ago; he was supposed to work for a financial institution or as an accountant at state agencies.

However, the government policy to promote the establishm ent of business units, improve the business climate and market opportunities inspired him to open a CD and DVD shop, one of the businesses which requires only a small investment and little e xperience.

Mr Nikone said that he began to open his CD and DVD shops five years ago with investment funds of about six million kip.

At Dongdok market, some 15 km outside of Vientiane city centre, Mr Nikone Nin chalern was active in his business. He gets up early everyday to prepare his goods to sell at the market.

At his shop he not only sells CDs but also a wide range of electronic accessories such as mobile phone chargers, telephone cases and head phones. The prices of his goods are affordable to customers as they range from 5,000 to 100,000 kip per unit.

The price of music CDs and movies is 5,000 to 20,000 kip each while the price of telephone chargers, telephone cases and telephone equipment ranges from 10,000 to 1 00,000 kip each.

His shop also provides other services such as repairing telephones and watches and downloading music to mobile phones.

He said he purchased all of his goods from the Morning Market and in Thailand. He orders new stock once every three to four days. Each time, he invests about one million kip.

Mr Nikone said he earns about 400,000 to 500,000 kip a day, adding that his profit was not much but he thinks that it is better than working as an employee for a company.

He said that most of his customers are young people and he is happy to sell the goods and provide service to his customers.
