Japanese import Lao silk for eco-friendly kimonos
Japanese companies are seeking to import Lao silk for use in producing traditional costumes like kimonos due to its quality and natural colour, according to a senior trade official.
The Ministry of Industry and Commerce's Trade and Product Promotion Department Director General, Mr Somvang Ninthavong, said Lao silk was gaining a reputation with Japanese customers, speaking at a seminar on trends in the Japanese handicraft market.
“Japanese importers come to Laos to discuss the process we use to make raw silk material products, that is harmless to humans and the environment,” Mr Somvang said.
He said he hoped silkworm breeders would profit if practical cooperation with Japanese buyers succeeded in ramping up the trade of silk handicrafts.
“Farmers are relying on traditional ways to produce silk and there is still a need for government sectors to support the farmers with funds, technical staff and techniques to meet the demand of increasing markets,” Mr Somvang said.
Mr Somvang said Japan was one of the most developed countries in the world so the customers were looking for more old-style products.
Aside from Japan, the Republic of Korea is also interested in Lao handicrafts, textiles and agricultural products that are made in an environmentally friendly way.
Asean-Korea Centre Trade and Investment Unit Second Deputy Head, Mr Ki Bong Moon, told Vientiane Times at a seminar on Lao access to Korean markets that a number of Korean importers were interested in Lao coffee, textiles and other agricultural products.
Mr Ki said Laos had a great opportunity to access Korean markets with its unique textile, rice and coffee products.
