Private company targets bigger investment
The Burapha Agro-Forestry Company Ltd, a Swedish and Lao joint venture, expects to establish a bio-refinery Factory in Laos worth US$1.15 billion, according to a senior company staffer.
The company's Deputy Managing Director, Ms Souphayvanh Thiengchanhxay spoke at the 20th anniversary of the company.
She revealed that the factory aims to produce dissolving pulp for supply to the textile industry, as well as ethanol, Lignosulfonate, bio-fuel, biogas and electricity.
Ms Souphayvanh said the company requires a larger plantation area of up to 30,000 ha because it needs more than 2.3 million cubic metres of wood per year.
“More than 3,400 workers will be directly employed by the plant and another 18,400 indirectly,” she said.
“The target markets of the products produced will be China, Indonesia, India and Thailand,” Ms Souphayvanh said.
Currently, the company employs a total of 159 staff, including foreign technical staff from Europe, Australia and South Africa, while another 200 are daily contract workers.
The company is a timber plantation and processing company located in Xaythany district, Vientiane.
The processed wood projects are exported to more than 10 countries around the world with a total export value of at least 2 billion kip per year.
“Each year, we contributed rev enue to the government of at least 500 million kip, furthering the socio-economic development of the country,” Ms Souphayvanh said.
She said Burapha Agro-Forestry Company is determined to cooperate with the concerned parties and apply to the directives of the Party and government to lead the country out of the least development status by 2020 and be ready for Asean Economic Community in 2015 .
Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Mr Vilayvanh Phomkhe, Managing Director of Burapha Agro-Forestry Company Ltd, Mr Peter Fogde were among the honourable guests present at the ceremony.
