Danish garment firm opens factory in Laos
Mascot, a leading Danish garment manufacturing firm has opened a factory in Laos, aiming to make the landlocked country as one of its garment production bases.
The company held a ceremony recently to open its garment factory business in the Vientiane Industrial and Trade Area (VITA Park), which is situated in Nongthong village, Xaythany district.
A number of senior government officials including Minister to the Government Office, Ms Bounpheng Mounphosay, Minister of Industry and Commerce, Dr Nam Vinhaket and company management attended the event.
A senior official from Mascot International Laos, Mr Michael Grosbol said the firm was one of the largest manufacturers of its kind in Europe.
Mascot pr oduces heavy duty uniforms and safety boots that are usually used by construction workers and airport employees, which are hard wearing and sold throughout the world.
The company will make Laos as one of its production bases to produce goods for international markets, mainly its European, Australian and US markets where demand has inceased, Mr Grosbol said.
The company has invested US$8 million to build the new factory which will employ 800 workers. Mascot acquired a large concession area and plans to increase productio n capacity by a factor of five in the future.
Company management said that its garment factory in Laos will have the same safety standards as its garment factories in other places around the world. The Lao factory has already gained SA800 standard certification.
Ms Bounpheng who is also Vice President of the Lao National Committee for Special and Specific Economic Zones Management, said Vientiane Industrial and Trade Area Park is one of the new investment destinations which the government wants to promote.
She said the government had made a commitment to facilitate the operations of businesses in the area.
The development of the industrial park will bring benefits to local people such as better infrastructure, she said, as well as more employment opportunities.
