Khammuan province economy booms

Khammuan province in central Laos saw strong economic growth of 12.78 percent last fiscal year as more of the people there engaged in commercial production of crops.

The province had succeeded in producing enough food for itself and a surplus for export to other provinces and neighbouring countries, it was revealed at a meeting to review the socio-economic development plan for the 2012/2013 fiscal year.

Khammuan governor Mr Khambai Damlath, who presided over the meeting, said his province's GDP reached 4,389 billion kip (about US$548 million), which was a 12.78 percent increase on last year.

The average income per capita in the province was 11.5 million kip (US$1.490).

In the fiscal year the province produced 286,328 tonnes of rice, an average of 754 kilograms per person.

More than 60,730 people in 486 villages in the province now have access to electricity. There are more than 222,000 people in the province who have telephones, or an average of 61 phones per 100 people.

The industry and handicraft sectors generated more than 500 billion kip, which was 99.72 percent of how much the province planned for them to make. The total value of the province's export products was US$86 million, achieving 76.67 percent of the plan for annual export.

A number of poor people in the province have been lifted out of poverty thanks to the region's strong economic growth.

The meeting also discussed the development plan for the 2013/2014 fiscal year.
