Bourses close with mixed fortunes

Shares closed higher on the HCM City Stock Exchange yesterday, but fell in Ha Noi after the launching of a new set of indices on the northern bourse.

The new benchmark index, HNXFF, increased 0.01 per cent on the first day to 65.19 points. The Index, including stocks with a minimum free float rate of 5 per cent, will co-exist with the current HNX-Index, but replace it in a year's time.

The northern bourse yesterday also introduced a HNX Large Cap Index and HNX Mid/Small Cap Index based on the capitalisation and indices for different sectors, including the manufacturing index, construction index and financials index.

The VN-Index on HCM City Exchange advanced 0.15 per cent to 508.53 points.

More than 77.68 million shares changed hands with a total value of VND996.4 billion (US$47.47 million). Both trading volume and value were lower than the average figures of last week.

The VN30-Index, tracking the southern bourse's top shares by capitalisation and liquidity, lost 0.03 per cent to 568.87 points with losers doubling gainers by 16-8.

Notably, PetroVietnam Drilling (PVD) yesterday lost VND5,500 ($0.26) to VND64,000 ($3.04) per share and Vinamilk was VND1,000 ($0.0049) lower at VND141,000 ($6.7) per share.

Over decliners, including Bao Viet Group (BVH), HCM City Infrastructure Investment (CII), real estate developer Hoang Anh Gia Lai (HAG), Masan Group (MSN), Hoa Sen Group (HSG), Vietcombank (VCB) and Sacombank (STB), lost between VND100 ($0.0049) to VND600 ($0.028) per share.

Overall 155 codes lost yesterday while 89 managed to increase.

According to FPT Securities, the record gas-price increase of VND6,600 ($0.31) per kilo on Sunday had a bad impact on the market in general. However, it helped boost shares of the industry.

PetroVietnam Gas (PVG) earned VND1,000 ($0.049) yesterday, helping the benchmark indice finish higher.

On the Ha Noi Stock Exchange, the HNX-Index lost 0.09 per cent to 65.13 points on the exchange of 32 million shares.

The total trading volume reached VND258.26 billion ($12.29 million).

The HNX30-Index, composed of the capital's largest shares, edged up 0.23 per cent to 122.9 points.
