PESTECH wins US$29.3m contract with EDL

PESTECH will build a 42 km 115kV transmission line and substation from Pakxe district, Champassak province, to the Lao-Thai border

PESTECH Sdn Bhd (PSB), a 100 percent subsidiary of main market-listed PESTECH International Berhad (PESTECH) in Malaysia, has signed a contract with Electricite du Laos (EDL) to build a 42 kilometre 115kV transmission line and 115kV substation to connect power supply from hydropower plants in Saravan, a southern province of Laos, to Thailand.

PSB on Friday signed the contract worth US$29,257,278 which is expected to be fulfilled in 18 months from the commencement date.

The signing is the culmination of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed with EDL and a joint venture between VLV Soumpholphakdy Sole Co., Ltd. and PESTECH Sdn Bhd on September 10, 2012. The scope of the 12-month MOU, which covered the undertaking of feasibility studies on the electrification project, paved the way for the signing of the contract and execution of the project for EDL. The feasibility study undertaken presented EDL with a convincing business case.

PESTECH Sdn Bhd has been working with Trident Lao Co., Ltd. in Laos and Indochina to tap the vast potential in the Mekong region where countries are progressing rapidly and electrification is a critical economic development factor. The project will enable Laos to increase their current electricity supply to the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT).

In the electrification industry, track record is the key criteria and PESTECH has that with the numerous successful electricity connectivity projects they have completed in the Southeast Asian region.

“This win in the Lao PDR attests to the track record that PESTECH has built over the years. Being consistently dependable is of paramount importance in an industry where the lights must always be on, i.e. the electricity connection has zero tolerance for downtime. The Lao PDR is a big market for us now and through this contract we are able to expand our experience and track record in this part of the region,” said Chief Executive Officer of PESTECH International Berhad, Paul Lim.

PESTECH is in the business of connecting electrical power to end-users through High Voltage (HV), Extra High Voltage (EHV) substations, transmission lines and underground cables to cater for all types of power requirement in all kinds of industries. While turnkey projects are a mainstay, the company designs and manufactures its own communication, protection and control products that are used in their own projects or sold as finished products.

The Group is continuously widening its range of own-manufactured products as it aspires to be the preferred end-to-end solution electricity connection provider for its customers. PESTECH has successfully completed projects in Malaysia, Cambodia, Papua New Guinea, Ghana and Sri Lanka, to name a few.
