Lao goods see brisk trade at French Institute fair

Lao Farmers Products, an organic food company based Vientiane, hopes to raise its profile among the international community, and a fair at the French Institute in Vientiane on Saturday offered the perfect opportunity.

The group set up a booth displaying a range of food items worth about seven million kip.

“This is the first time we've done this at the French Institute and we don't expect to make a great profit, but we wanted to be part of this interesting event,” booth operator Ms Pheng Khamdy told Vientiane Times at the fair. The booth displayed tempting items such as organic rice, green tea, coffee and other organic products.

“Our prices range from 15,000 kip to 65,000 kip. Our products are mostly exported to France and other European countries,” Ms Pheng said.

A fair organiser said this was the fourth such event, with the main objective being to build connections between local businesses and the French Institute.

“It's a fun activity which helps to build interest ahead of the new term at the Institute. It is also designed to strengthen relations, especially with those people who already have a connection to the Institute,” he said.

Running from 10am to 5pm, this year's fair featured more than 20 booths and was well attended.

The fair was also a meeting point for members of Vientiane Accueil, an organisation that regularly hosts various activities for the French community in Vientiane.

The event included musical performances, displays of handicrafts, cooking demonstrations, and provided information on education and sports.
