Europe, Thailand boost business links in Laos

The European Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Laos (ECCIL) plans to create a framework for business cooperation with the Belgian-Luxembourg/Thai Chamber of Commerce (BeLuThai).

The two chambers of commerce signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in Vientiane on Saturday, aiming to bolster business cooperation in anticipation of Asean integration.

The area of cooperation will cover a wide range of business activities, including the promotion of trade and investment via information exchange, economic and business development updates, and maintaining professional ‘best practices' including the building of databases in both technology breakthroughs, workshops and seminars.

The MOU will be in place for two years and after nine months a more formal working programme will be put in place, according to a handout.

Present at the signing ceremony were BeLuThai President Dr Sutharm Valaisathien and representing ECCIL were Vice President Mr Paul Simcock, board director Mr Gerald Walewijk, with ECCIL Executive Director Dr Ramon Bruesseler as witness.

ECCIL has been operating in Laos since early 2010 and has continued to build a good business relationship with both the Lao government and Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, along with various other European chambers of commerce within the r egion.

ECCIL has given numerous presentations on “Doing Business in Laos” including on “Investing in Laos” throughout South East Asia.

European and Lao companies are starting to find that becoming a member of ECCIL can provide greater knowledge and understanding of Lao laws and regulations, including the latest changes and drafts to Lao laws and in many cases business matching.
