Xaythany district exceeds meat production targets

Xaythany district authorities expect to supply more than 3,400 tonnes of meat, aiming to satisfy the high demand of Vientiane markets over the next six months of this year.

District Agriculture and Forestry Department Director, Mr Banelom Si-akkhasone said recently Xaythany district authorities set a plan to supply some 3,445 tonnes of meat in accordance with its animals rearing capacity, including poultry, beef, pork, goat and fish.

Mr Banelom said over the next six months they will focus on supplying 55 tonnes of water buffalo, 70 tonnes of beef, 800 tonnes of pork, 25 tonnes of goat and 270 tonnes of poultry meat, 1,900 tonnes of fish including fish which farmers raise in the ponds and rivers. Also, there are 460 tonnes of eggs expected to be produced.

In the past three months from Jun e to August, Xaythany district was able to supply considerably more meat than targeted. So far, Xaythany district has supplied over 3,844 tonnes of meat to Vientiane markets, far above expectat ion.

Mr Banelom said Xaythany district increased its meat production by encouraging farmers to expand their activities. There is still high demand for meat in Vientiane markets, and consequently the prices are high.

The number of poultry farms, fish ponds and livestock have increased year by year in Xaythany district.

Across the district in 2013 there are now 11 cattle farms with a total of 770 cattle, 54 pig farms with 45,978 pigs, 69 chicken farms with 465,806 hens, ten duck farms with 21,720 ducks and 27 fish farms in the Nam Ngum river and local farm ponds, housing many thousands of fish.

In the past six months of this year, Xaythany district was able to supply almost 3,900 tonnes of meat, which was well over their target. This figure included 33 tonnes of water buffalo, 144 tonnes of beef, 820 tonnes of pork, 9 tonnes of goat, 187 tonnes of poultry, 600 tonnes of eggs, and over 2,000 tonnes of fish.
